Nearly all-modern hearing aids and Cochlear Implants are equipped with a T-Coil.  A T-Coil is a micro antenna inside the hearing aid that picks up the sound wirelessly from an induction-hearing loop that is installed in the facility. A magnetic field is produced by a low voltage electrical current from the amplifier. The sound is transmitted from the speakers' microphone and is broadcast directly into the users' hearing aids or cochlear implant, bypassing the PA system.

The hearing loop eliminates the reverberation for people with t-coil equipped hearing devices so that they can fully experience the sound from the speakers microphone. A hearing loop is an ADA approved technology that transmits sound wirelessly to a person’s hearing aid or cochlear Implant (CI). The resulting voice or musical signal is crystal clear without unwanted room noise or latency. It sounds as if the person is talking directly to you, inches away. A hearing loop system provides an even magnetic signal across the room with a full frequency response. The magnetic signal is received by the person’s hearing aid or CI, matched to their hearing loss level, resulting in a rich, fulfilling, and enjoyable listening experience.

A hearing loop system consists of:

• Sound source from a microphone or other program sound system.

• A hearing loop amplifier that transforms the sound source to magnetic signal.

• A hearing loop cable acts as an aerial signal.

• A person’s hearing aid or CI device receives the signal.

Hearing loop technology turns your own hearing device into a wireless speaker that is customized for your own ears.

Hearing loop technology provides sound with no echo or extraneous noises.

Hearing loop technology is ADA compliant.

WHY YOUR VENUE SHOULD BE LOOPED

First we must understand the problem we are trying to overcome and understand what happens when someone has hearing loss. Hearing loss is not just a volume issue. For most people it is an understanding issue. Hearing loss is unique to every individual and there is no “one fits all” solution. Hearing loss is the invisible disability, it is the hidden disadvantage. We tend to lose our high frequencies first. This results in the loss of understanding words. The high frequencies are where the consonants sounds of speech are located: “th” “s” “t” “p” “k”. The sounds that differentiate similar sounding words like: teeth, feet, thief, piece, etc.

When we lose our consonants, the problem becomes significantly worse when there is background babble or ambient room sound especially with reverberation. Modern high-tech digital hearing aids and cochlear implants are fantastic but really only provide understanding of speech from 6 – 10 feet in quiet situations. Add ambient background sounds and it becomes less. No matter how good the hearing aids are, there is still a need for assistive listening devices where there is distance from the speakers, reverberation or ambient noise. When reverberation and echoes mix with direct sound, speech intelligibility diminishes greatly even for people with good hearing.

Reverberation And Echo

A hearing loop removes reverberation and background sound improving what is called “signal-to-noise” thus providing the listener with clear speech directly to their hearing aids or cochlear implant via the t-coil. The t-coil is a copper wound micro antennae inside the device which picks up the signal via a magnetic field from the hearing loop. The signal bypasses the PA system and is sent directly to the end user. A hearing loop can eliminate the problem nearly 100% when professionally installed for those who use hearing aids, cochlear implants or loop listeners. Even people with normal hearing can benefit and enjoy listening in a hearing loop.

Get in the Hearing Loop

American Academy of Audiology

This campaign will enlighten and excite hearing aid and cochlear implant users, as well as audiologists and other hearing health-care professionals about telecoils and hearing loops and their unique benefits.

Hearing loops transmit the audio from a PA system directly to telecoil-equipped hearing aids and cochlear implants. The telecoil functions as an antenna, relaying sounds directly into the ear without background noise just like Wi-Fi connects people to the Web.
